Businesses need to value their customer relationships, listen to their clients, hear their concerns, and carefully plan and put in place ways to make sure their customers are satisfied. More than likely, if a customer feels they receive poor service, that situation could be enough of a slip-up to make them switch to another company- often the competitor. Verizon Wireless launched a VOIP-based, Linux-powered home phone on Friday, the Verizon Hub. The Hub plugs into a home broadband line and acts as a family calendar, limited Web browser, messaging center, digital picture frame and, of course, a phone. The Hub is based on OpenPeak's OpenFrame design, which we saw at the Consumer Electronics Show in 2008. The OpenFrame or the Hub is an 8-inch, 800x480 touchscreen device which sits on a table or kitchen counter. It has a single DECT 6.0 cordless phone that snaps into the base. The Hub's home screen shows floating, Web-based widgets such as a calendar and the weather, along with details about missed calls and visual voice mail. Verizon dressed the OpenFrame up with their own proprietary services. The device can stream movie trailers and other video from V CAST; send directions to phones using VZ Navigator; track children's cell phones using Chaperone; view local traffic information, and send and receive text, picture, and video messages. read more »

FCC Questions Comcast's VoIP Call Handling By Michael Dinan TMCnet Editor The federal agency that oversees communications in the United States is questioning a practice from the nation s second-largest Internet service provider that apparently subjects competitors VoIP calls to quality disruption while preserving its own digital voice service. In a letter to Comcast Corp., officials at the Federal Communications Commission are critical of a specific offshoot of the company s plan to de-prioritize a user s connection if that user is causing congestion. Since the FCC (News - Alert) ruled against Comcast (News - Alert) several months ago for violating U.S. policy when it blocked Internet traffic, the Philadelphia-based company has developed some policies on Web use. The de-prioritization is one policy. Starting Oct. 1, Comcast also began limiting Internet use among subscribers to 250 gigabytes per month. But another step the company took to switch a user from the standard Priority Best read more »

CSM sits in the core of the network and moves real-time policy enforcement; routing, control, monitoring and interoperability out of the individual PBXs and into a common SOA-based session layer. CSM's SOA interfaces eliminate direct point-to-point communications between the clients and servers, making it much easier for organizations to reduce costs further through vendor consolidation and PBX centralization. "Companies are collapsing voice and data networks in an effort to increase productivity, profitability and shareholder value," said Covergence president and CEO Jim Moran. "Our customers want to greatly reduce the operating expense associated with managing voice and data as separate services. By creating this voice and data "cloud" service, organizations can cost-effectively deploy and manage voice like any IP application without replacing the existing infrastructure."
